How to apply 4" equicast
When the temperature is over 80 degrees place pouch in a cold bucket of water
for 10 minutes before opening the pouch. If you want more wrapping time do not wet cast first sponge on water after wrapping
process. After the hoof has been trimmed and balanced put on a pair of latex gloves to open the equicast pouch. Place
the casting tape in a bucket of cold water for about 5 seconds then squeeze out excess water. You only have about 1 minute
before the cast starts setting up.
Step 1 Remove
any flares and/or dishing. Make sure the hoof is in the middle of the bony column; check the wall thickness on both the medial
and lateral sides, uneven wall thickness is a sign of imbalanced feet. Try to achieve the best hoof angle that you can get.
Do not cut the toe area to close to the sole you can always add shims to the ground surface of the shoe before you cast the
hoof. Fit the shoe full and in the center of the boney column the cast will fill in areas where the shoe is hanging over the
hoof to provide the support that is needed.
Step 2 Attach (glue in the heel area, or a
couple of nails) a pre shaped Event type shoe with fitted clips. Clean an area about the size of a quarter on both the medial
and lateral side of the hoof walls, behind the forth nail hole (heel area) this helps hold the cast on the hoof. Put
on latex gloves to open the equicast pouch. Place the casting tape in a bucket of cold water for
about 5 seconds squeeze out excess water. You only have about 1 minute before the cast starts setting up.
Step 3 Hold the hoof like it’s held to
be shod. Make sure the shoe is secure. Apply about 5 cc of Vettec Super Fast on each side of the hoof wall, the area that
you have cleaned. Start on the right hand side of the hoof wall where you have placed 5 cc of Super Fast. Start unrolling
the tape over the heel area of the hoof (if you are right handed) in a counter clock wise motion. Wrap the hoof with about
half the casting tape covering the walls and half covering the bottom of the shoe. You should be able to go around 8 or more
times. When wrapping the hoof. Stay near the hair line on one side. When you cross over the heel area drop down close to the
ground surface of the hoof so that you just catch the opposite heel and bottom of the wall on the other side, like a figure
8 across the frog area, then alternate.
Step 4 Press the casting tape to the bottom
of the hoof; make sure there are no lumps or folds on the sole. Place about a quart of sawdust, shavings, or soft sand on
the floor (like a pyramid) then place the freshly cast hoof on the pyramid. This will press the cast up into the sole area,
adding support to the sole and frog of the hoof. Lift the opposite hoof off the ground for about 30 to 45 seconds. This allows
the hoof you just wrapped to expand within the cast.
Step 5 Do not get any casting tape on the hair
line or the soft heel area. If you do, trim while the cast is curing. Let the cast cure for about 5 minutes before you
move the horse. Let the cast cure for about 30 minutes before riding. Finished
